"One of the things the College has taught me is to set my goals much higher because you never know what you can achieve until you try. Once I have some experience, my plan is to set up my own theatre company and work with people from different cultures around the world."
As she completes her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts at Lewisham Southwark College, Indre Navickaite has an exciting future, having won an unconditional offer from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama – one of the most prestigious drama schools in the UK.
Indre will study for a degree in Applied Theatre, Drama and Education, which will enable her to combine her love of drama with her desire to empower people and communities.
“I’ve worked with young people on the autistic spectrum and it has struck me that they bring unique gifts to the performing arts. I plan to create autism-friendly performances for companies like Autism Matters Theatre and the Polka Theatre,” she says. “I see drama not only as entertainment but also as a tool for social change.
Indre’s interest in pursuing drama as a career was sparked, as a teenager, when her director told her: “In theatre you can be anywhere, anyone, and at any period.
She decided to apply to Lewisham Southwark College, and began what she describes as “a beautiful journey”. “Compared to the rather timid actor I was when I arrived, I now feel completely different. I’ve collaborated with a great group of people who’ve made every day fun and I’ve learnt so much from them.
“I’ve also been lucky enough to be taught by Karla Ptacek during my second year. With her expertise, encouragement and support, and a lot of hard work, I have achieved my dreams and more!”
