Entry Requirements
Applicants will need 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) including science mathematics and English.
Assessment Method
The assessment method for this course is a mix of coursework (four units) externally assessed written exams (two units) and emphasis on practical work data analysis and scientific communication.
Aims of the course
One of the main aims of this course is to develop core scientific knowledge; this helps students build a solid understanding of biology chemistry and physics alongside applied areas such as environmental science and medical science. Another aim is building practical and analytical skills; the course emphasises hands-on practical work fostering skills in laboratory techniques data analysis and problem-solving essential for scientific roles or higher education. A third aim is fostering the application of knowledge whereby students learn to apply scientific theories to real-world scenarios making them workplace-ready and equipping them to solve industry-relevant problems. Emphasis is also given to the preparation for higher education or employment as the qualification is a stepping stone to university-level science courses (e.g. biomedical sciences environmental studies) or entry-level roles in fields such as healthcare pharmaceuticals or laboratory work. We also encourage research and independent learning; through projects and assignments students develop research skills critical thinking and the ability to work independently. This qualification provides a vocational alternative to traditional academic routes offering a balance of theoretical knowledge and practical application for students with diverse learning preferences.
Progression Opportunities
The Foundation Diploma is meant to lead to a second year of study with our students achieving a full BTEC Extended Diploma. There can also be career opportunities in laboratory work healthcare pharmaceuticals or environmental science.
Facilities
Students will have access to a range of specialized facilities that reflect the practical and applied nature of the course. These facilities include laboratories equipped for practical work in biology chemistry and physics such as experiments in chemical analysis and material testing. Tools include microscopes pH meters calorimeters colorimeters appropriate glassware and other scientific apparatus. We have ICT suites and software with access to scientific software for modelling data analysis and report generation (e.g. Excel). We use online resources like simulation tools to reinforce theoretical concepts. We have a library and Learning Resource Center where students can find books journals and online databases for research and assignments.
Career Options
Students are meant to complete a second year achieving a full BTEC Extended Diploma. There can also be career opportunities in laboratory work healthcare pharmaceuticals or environmental science.
