Southwark College took part in the MEI Maths Challenge’s college finals at the annual competition on The Cut, showcasing the best of students’ numeracy skills.
This annual competition, held in partnership with Mathematics Education Innovation (MEI), provided a platform for 50 students aged 16-18 to demonstrate their problem-solving and quick-thinking skills to their peers. Over 25,000 students competed across 60 colleges throughout the UK to secure a place in the final.
Maths students practiced in their lessons in the lead up to the competition which had first rounds in December. The students competing in the college finals were all passionate maths enthusiasts, encouraging one another to push their boundaries and explore the creativity behind maths.
The winners will represent Southwark College in the competition’s regional final in March 2024.
Competition winner David Arimoro, a GCSE Maths student at Southwark College, said: "I enjoyed participating in the College's maths challenge for a place in the FE Maths Challenge and putting my maths knowledge and skills to the test. The fun in maths lies not just in arriving at the correct answer but in the creative process of finding multiple pathways to reach a solution. I'm pleased to have taken part and look forward to competing in the final."
Scott Peasey, Vice Principal at Southwark College, said: “The FE Maths Challenge is a fantastic way to engage and inspire students. It demonstrates not only the importance of maths in day-to-day life but also allows our students to build their confidence and learn from one another.
"We look forward to running similar events at the College and endeavour to support students in thriving and succeeding throughout their journey with us and beyond.”
MEI's Further Education (FE) Maths Challenge is a competition for post-16 students working towards gaining a Functional Skills maths qualification or improving their GCSE Mathematics grade.
