At Southwark College, students from the Supported Learning Skills for Progression programme recently took their passion for sustainability to new heights with a creative and impactful exhibition on campus. This initiative aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues and offer practical solutions to living more sustainably.
The exhibition showcased innovative ideas and hands-on displays, allowing visitors to learn about sustainability in informative and engaging ways. Various interactive installations designed by the students themselves were also featured. Each display focused on a key aspect of sustainability, from transportation choices to the importance of bees in our ecosystems. Students took the initiative to research, design, and create the exhibits, turning their learning into action.
One feature centred around Sustainable Transportation, where students highlighted the importance of eco-friendly travel options. The display promoted practical steps for reducing emissions and combating air pollution, from public transport and cycling to electric vehicles and car-sharing schemes. This exhibit also encouraged visitors to think about the impact of their own travel choices on the environment.
The Phone Free Zone, created by student Jamila Sesay, encouraged individuals to take a break from the constant barrage of digital notifications. This quiet space would allow students to unwind, reflect, and reconnect with the world around them without the distractions of their phones. The exhibit reminded attendees of the importance of taking time for themselves in a fast-paced, technology-driven world.
Scott Peasey, Vice Principal at Southwark College, attended the exhibition and said: "We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and creativity in organising this sustainability exhibition. Their passion for protecting the planet and finding innovative solutions is truly inspiring. At Southwark College, we believe in empowering our students not only with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their careers, but also with the tools to make a positive impact on the world around them. This exhibition is a fantastic example of how our students lead by example, and we look forward to supporting them in their ongoing commitment to sustainability."
This exhibition was more than just a showcase of student work; it was a powerful statement of education and youth's role in creating a more sustainable world. The Supported Learning students at Southwark College have proven that with creativity, knowledge, and a passion for change, students can actively participate in shaping the future.
The exhibition demonstrated their commitment to sustainability and acted as a call to action for the Southwark College community to take responsibility for the planet’s future.
At Southwark College, we support our students’ creativity, innovation, and passion for change. This exhibition is just one of many ways our students are leading the charge for a greener, more sustainable world.
