Medical Mavericks, an organisation aiming to inspire the next generation of medics and scientists, recently hosted an exciting and interactive Health and Science Skills Conference for aspiring healthcare professionals at Southwark College. The event utilised actual medical equipment to offer students the opportunity to learn a range of hands-on medical skills and explore potential career pathways in the Health and Science sectors.
The Conference began with demonstrations of medical kits and their uses. For example, students were shown an ultrasound machine and its visual output when used on different body parts.
Students were then split into smaller groups to rotate between different practical sessions focused on real-world medical techniques and skills, including taking blood pressure and exploring diagnostic techniques. These sessions gave the students valuable insight into the health sector and helped them make informed decisions about their future careers.
Tom Warrender from medical mavericks said: “We visit schools and colleges all over the UK with a mobile hospital to inspire the next generation of medics and scientists in the NHS. We’re not just talking about doctors, nurses, physios, and paramedics; we introduce lots of different careers from places like Healthcare Science, which is a group of 50 careers that perform 85% of all diagnostic tests.
“We let students play with things like ultrasound machines, ophthalmoscopes, ECGs, and keyhole surgery. They can take blood out of a fake arm, listen to their pulses, scan their veins with a vein scanner, and it introduces a huge range of alternative careers that they might not know are out there and are accessible with the qualifications that they are studying for at the College.”
The Health and Science Skills Conference and collaboration with medical mavericks gave Southwark College students the opportunity to experience what it's like to work in the medical field, have access to expert guidance, and gain an overall deeper understanding of the diverse careers in the healthcare industry.
Claire Reed, Assistant Principal for Skills and Adult Education at Southwark College said: "Events like these are an invaluable opportunity for our students to gain real-world experience and explore the variety of career paths available in healthcare. We hope this event has inspired many to pursue their passion for health and science and to take the next step toward a rewarding career."
The event demonstrated Southwark College’s ongoing commitment to providing students with the tools, skills, and experiences they need to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
