Southwark College is proud to announce the launch of the Hotpoint Field Service Engineer Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP), offering job seekers the opportunity to develop essential skills and explore a career in appliance repair and maintenance.

The exciting initiative, launched in collaboration with Job Centre Plus, welcomed participants to complete a six-week intensive course, designed to equip them with the practical skills and qualifications necessary to join the workforce as Field Service Engineers. The free course offers an invaluable chance to gain industry-specific experience and improve employability in a thriving sector.

A highlight was a presentation from Hotpoint, one of the leading manufacturers in the home appliance industry. Stephen Bodley, Regional Operations Manager and Rebecca Minett, Senior HR Manager and current HR Business Partner from the Hotpoint team, joined the students and shared insights into the benefits of joining the company, with a focus on training, career progression and employee support. They spoke about their own career experience as well as their time at Hotpoint and their enthusiasm for this new collaborative course.

Rebecca Minett, said: "Hotpoint are really excited to be working in partnership with Southwark College to build careers together."

The students were highly engaged during the session, asking questions about working at Hotpoint, the daily responsibilities of a Field Service Engineer, and the long-term prospects of the role.

Participants will receive theoretical lessons and practical workshops, including hands-on experience with Hotpoint appliances, gaining key skills such as appliance diagnostics, repair techniques, customer service, and safety protocols. Upon completion of the programme, successful candidates will receive an OCNLR Extended Certificate in Skills for Independence and Employability and a guaranteed interview with Hotpoint for a position as a field service engineer.

Stephen Cohen, Apprenticeships Sales and Business Development Assessor at Southwark College, said:"Steve and Becca from Hotpoint met the learners to pitch the ‘offer’ from the organisation. All the candidates were impressed by the job roles, benefits and possibilities. This has bolstered engagement in the course. What a fantastic way to kick off the inaugural run of this exciting SWAP!"

The sector-based work academy aims to bridge the skills gap and provide job seekers a clear pathway to stable, long-term employment. The course is designed to give participants the confidence and competence to succeed in their chosen field.

Southwark College is dedicated to providing high-quality education and training to students of all ages. We work closely with local employers and partners to offer a wide range of vocational courses and apprenticeships that give our students the skills they need to succeed in their chosen careers.
