The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department at Southwark College organised a 'Mind Your Mood' wellbeing day tailored to meet the specific needs of its students. The session recognised these students' unique challenges and focused on sharing emotional wellbeing tools and information on support services available within the College and local community.
The wellbeing day included sessions on healthy habits for the mind, emotional health, creativity, welfare, safeguarding, and mindfulness. Students also heard from Kineara Charity representatives, who shared information on the support they offer to help people connect to their community, access education and employment, sustain tenancies during challenging times, and improve wellbeing and health.
The sessions organised by Family Emotional Wellbeing Project C.I.C, provided tangible solutions to the prevalent issues which can significantly impact ESOL students' academic journey, such as juggling family responsibilities, work commitments, and studies. It also sensitively and practically addressed emotional wellbeing, offering techniques to manage stress, cope with academic pressures, and foster resilience.
The Mind Your Mood Day also focused on recognising the language barriers many ESOL learners face, sharing information on additional student support and accessing relevant support services within the community. This comprehensive approach resonated with the students, fostering a sense of inclusion and support within the College's community, and providing them with tools and a sense of empowerment over their wellbeing.
