Southwark College recently hosted a dynamic and engaging Business, IT, and Service Industries Skills Conference, bringing together industry experts, local businesses, and students for an action-packed day of inspiration, innovation, and skill-building. The conference was designed to highlight the talents of our students while providing valuable insights into the fast-evolving sectors of Business, IT, and Travel & Tourism.

The event featured a range of exciting sessions, including talks, live demonstrations, and hands-on workshops. These practical workshops gave attendees the opportunity to learn directly from industry leaders and gain a better understanding of the skills required in today’s competitive job market, leaving them feeling prepared and confident.

The day began with a Bank of England Insight Session for Business students, where expert, Melissa Davey, provided valuable advice on the financial landscape. This session was followed by a Bank of England Advisory Committee and Interest Rates Discussion, where the committee decided to pause the interest rate at 4.5%. Whilst Flight Service Demonstrations offered Travel & Tourism students a hands-on learning experience, showcasing key industry skills to some of the senior staff members at the college. Later, a Coding Session in the Digital Hub, led by current T Level students, allowed students to dive deep into coding concepts and further develop their digital skills.

One of the day’s most anticipated sessions was The Apprentice Event led by former contestant Adam Corbally, who shared his career journey and experience on the hit reality TV show and offered valuable career advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Adam Corbally, said: “I’ve delivered motivation and enterprise for an amazing bunch of students who have been given the challenge to come up with their very own business idea. Listening skills, creative thinking skills, public speaking skills all wrapped into one brilliant day. It’s been a really, good, fun day and I cannot wait to visit Southwark College again.”

The Service Industries were also represented through insightful talks, such as Service Industry Insights with Donatella Cerruti from Hilton Hotels, providing students with valuable information about career opportunities within hospitality. The day concluded with a Public Sector Insights session led by Charles Stephenson from the London Metropolitan Police, discussing opportunities and career pathways within the public sector.
