Southwark College recently hosted the regional London final of the Further Education (FE) Maths Challenge, organised by Mathematics Education Innovation (MEI) and sponsored by AQA. The event brought together mathematics students from across the region for a day of challenging problem-solving, friendly competition, and teamwork.
The competition featured a series of stimulating rounds. Students from colleges across London worked in groups of four to complete a timed Kahoot quiz and a Tarsia jigsaw puzzle.
The participants competed in three categories: The Funkies – for students whose highest GCSE grade is a grade 1, or studying Functional Skills entry, Ein2steins – for students whose highest GCSE grade is a grade 2, or studying Functional Skills Level 1, Go Forth – for students whose highest GCSE grade is a grade 3, or studying Functional Skills Level 2.
The day was hosted by the enthusiastic staff from MEI and the judging panel was made up of representatives from AQA, who were on hand to assess the performances and provide feedback to the participants.
The competition was challenging, with teams showcasing their exceptional problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge. Southwark College proudly secured second place in all the categories, and therefore overall, demonstrating the strength of the mathematics department and the talent of the students.
