Southwark College hosted a landmark event to conclude the NCG Guarantee Digital Programme, an exciting initiative designed to empower students with the skills and knowledge they need for the rapidly evolving digital world. The AI and Digital World Conference was a day packed with interactive sessions, immersive technology showcases and thought-provoking keynote speakers.
The event featured a range of interactive activities, giving students the chance to engage with cutting-edge tools that are transforming the learning experience.
Students took part in interactive Virtual Reality sessions using the Meta Quest 3, guided by Learning Technologists and Game Design tutors, Jose Roberto Leonel Da Silva and Luke Kenyon. This allowed students to experiment with various educational apps, exploring trends in VR and its use in the classroom.
Lu Interactive Display brought a new level of engagement to students’ learning experiences. The interactive displays gave students the chance to practice exercises in subjects like GCSE Maths and English in an immersive, gamified environment where they were given balls to throw at the projection on the wall to hit their desired target and answer the questions correctly.
The Gaming Design students bought their projects to life in a creative presentation, where other students had the opportunity to try out the games, showcasing the incredible talent and innovation from the Gaming Design Course at Southwark College.
Professor Ian Mackie from London South Bank University (LSBU), delivered a presentation titled ‘Why study Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence?’ whilst Professor Victor Onyenagubom from Teesside University spoke about careers in the AI Era. They both offered valuable insights into prospective courses in ICT, AI, and Machine Learning, discussing the importance of these fields and the exciting career paths that await students.
The keynote speech was delivered by John Turner, an expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. With over ten years of experience and a Master’s-equivalent qualification from Oxford University, John captivated the audience with insights into the future of work and the essential role AI will play in shaping it. His talk explored topics such as Generative AI capabilities, AI integration in various industries, and the ethical and sustainable use of large language models. John said: "It was truly a pleasure to engage with the students and academics at Southwark College. I was impressed by the students' receptiveness to the information and the challenges we collectively face in this rapidly evolving world. We need not fear AI but rather focus on how to effectively navigate these new normal's. The students at Southwark demonstrated remarkable understanding and enthusiasm for their work, particularly in how they envision utilising AI in their future careers. Their open-mindedness showcases their readiness for a collaborative future with AI, highlighting their ingenuity and adaptability. Kudos to 'Team Southwark College'! I eagerly look forward to hearing about the successes of these talented students."
Additionally, the Filming Presentation, led by Isabel Mainelli, featured her insightful video essay on the film Fish Tank, demonstrating the intellectual depth and creative skill nurtured in the college's Filmmaking Course.

The event also spotlighted the hard work of Southwark College students. The Digital Badge Presentation Showcase featured student work highlighting their journeys at the college, culminating in their final piece to earn the NCG Guarantee Digital Badge. These presentations, selected by faculty members, were displayed across digital screens during the event, offering a glimpse into the diverse experiences and successes of Southwark College students. The focus for next term moves towards the NCG Mental Fitness Badge initiative where new challenges will be set for students to take part in.
The AI Conference and Digital World event not only marked the end of the NCG Guarantee Digital Badge Programme but also set the stage for the next generation of tech leaders, digital innovators, and creative minds. With interactive displays, expert-led sessions, and a focus on career readiness, it was a day that left students feeling inspired and empowered to embrace the future of work.
