Southwark College proudly welcomed Councillor Naima Ali, the Mayor of Southwark, for a special visit aimed at engaging with students and sharing insights into her journey, advocacy work, and the significance of Ramadan.

The visit gave students a unique opportunity to hear directly from the mayor about her personal and political journey. Students then gathered for an insightful talk in which Councillor Ali spoke about the significance of Ramadan, highlighting its role in fostering self-discipline, empathy, and a sense of unity within communities. Following the talk our students participated in a Q&A session, asking questions about her work, her experiences in politics, and how young people can contribute to positive change.

The visit concluded with closing remarks, leaving students inspired by the mayor’s dedication to social change and the values of leadership and resilience she embodies.

Assistant Principal for 16-18s, Ria Willoughby, said"It was a pleasure to welcome Mayor Naima Ali to Southwark College as part of the NCG Guarantee Mental Fitness initiative, providing our students with the opportunity to hear from an inspiring leader. Her passion for social justice and community advocacy resonated with our students, especially her insights on the significance of Ramadan. Events like these are invaluable in broadening our students' perspectives and encouraging them to engage with important societal issues."

Councillor Naima Ali has lived in the UK since the late 1990s and has spent nearly three decades championing social justice. Elected as a councillor in 2022, she has been an outspoken advocate for supporting the most vulnerable in society, particularly in her work combatting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), for which she serves as an FGM Ambassador for Southwark. Her visit to Southwark College reinforced her commitment to inspiring young people and empowering them to become active community citizens.

Southwark College remains committed to providing students with opportunities to engage with influential figures, broadening their perspectives and encouraging active participation in society. Learn more about our community engagement initiatives here.
